Reeds sinds vier jaar wordt aan de GESS Nederlands als moedertaal in het voortgezet onderwijs succesvol aangeboden. Leerlingen met Nederlands als moedertaal, hebben naast Engels en Duits de optie om Nederlands als extra taal binnen het curriculum te volgen. Dit houdt in dat leerlingen vier uur per week les krijgen van een gekwalificeerde docent Nederlandse Taal en Letterkunde.

In de lessen Nederlands wordt een combinatie van taal en literatuur gegeven, die zo veel mogelijk bij het Nederlandse schoolsysteem als ook bij het IB Middle Years Programme of Diploma Programme aansluit.

Sinds augustus 2010 volgen de leerlingen Nederlands daarnaast een equivalent van een uur per week culturele vorming. Het doel van deze lessen is niet alleen het in aanraking komen met extra taallessen Nederlands maar ook het kennis nemen van een aantal elementen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis, aardrijkskunde en maatschappijleer. Dit zal de reintegratie van de leerlingen bevorderen bij een eventuele terugkeer naar Nederland of België.

Aangezien Nederlands een belangrijk onderdeel in het profiel van de GESS vormt, werken wij samen met het Rijnlands Education Worldwide (REW). REW is de internationale afdeling van de Rijnlands Lyceum Foundation, die ook een aantal door de staat gesubsidieerde scholen in Nederland leidt. Deze organisatie helpt de GESS door het uitzenden van een docent en geregelde ondersteuning ter plekke, om er zeker van te zijn dat het Nederlandse programma bij de tijd, op niveau en op de juiste wijze gefaciliteerd is. Eveneens stelt het ons in staat om onze leerlingen uit de Nederlandse en Vlaamse gemeenschap te ondersteunen en te begeleiden bij hun eventuele vervolgopleiding aan een Nederlandse of Belgische universiteit.

Dutch Language at GESS

For 4 years now, GESS has been successfully supporting Dutch as a first language in its secondary school.  Dutch native speakers, in addition to English and German have an option to follow Dutch as an additional language within the regular school day.  This translates into four lessons each week delivered by a fully qualified, Dutch language and literature teacher.

The Dutch classes are a combination of language and literature that meet the needs of both the Dutch national system and the IB Middle Years Programme or Diploma Programme.

Since August 2010, Dutch students additionally follow the equivalent of one lesson per week of Dutch culture classes. The purpose of these classes is not only to expose students to additional native language development but also to cover some elements of the Dutch humanities programme to facilitate better reintegration into the Netherlands or Belgium should he or she have to return.

Given the importance of Dutch in the profile of GESS, the school now works in partnership with Rijnlands Education Worldwide (REW).  REW is the international language arm of the Rijnlands Lyceum Foundation which also runs a group of state subsidized schools in the Netherlands.  This organisation, through the provision of a teacher and regular support visits, helps GESS to make sure its Dutch programme is up to date, academically rigorous and properly resourced.  It furthermore allows us to support and counsel our Dutch and Flemish community wishing to return to the Netherlands or Belgium for their university years.
